Learn the skill of laying bricks and make your mark on the world! (Or Burngreave for starters!)
The courses is aimed at beginners to learn step by step, so don't worry if you are a complete beginner. Most courses are working on a real garden wall at the Centre, so you will be helping to turn a former school yard into our community garden.
On the course you will learn how to mix mortar by hand and also using the cement mixer. Learn how to build a wall and make it level and straight - and make a clean job of it too! Some courses also include mixing and laying concrete foundations when possible.
The first session of the course is always for practice only and taken down at the end of the session. Then we start on the garden wall, introducing new skills and techniques each week, step by step.
The course is mainly practical, practicing your techniques and newly discovered trowel skills. We will also spend a little time looking at different walls - for example those suitable for structural garden walls, or simple planters, or houses as well as the different types of bricks for different structures.
The basic skills you will learn can be applied to most small projects, so if you are working on something at home, do bring in any photos to discuss with the tutor.
New class in pointing added this summer due to popular demand!
